The Hamburg Port Authority (HPA) was established in October 2005 as an “Anstalt öffentlichen Rechts” (Institution under Public Law) in the course of the merging of the port-related competencies of various Hamburg authorities.
The Hamburg Port Authority employs some 1,900 staff. It relies on a futureoriented port management built on the 'one face to the customer' principle and is the central contact partner for all inquiries arising with regard to infrastructure,
navigational end operational safety and port security, property management and economic conditions in the port. The Hamburg Port Authority has a mandate to maintain functional the port of Hamburg. It has day to day responsibility for
shipping safety and the maintenance of Hamburg’s strong trading position.
