Abstract: |
The division of Hydraulics and Environmental Engineering is one of the four divisions of the Civil
Engineering Department of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTh), the oldest department of the Engineering School in AUTh. It covers all fields related to Water and the Environment in both the Civil Engineering degree of AUTh (with 220 students per year) and the research oriented Ph.D degree (with approximately 8 post-graduate students per year). There are four research groups within the division with the following research interests: (a) Fluid Mechanics and Hydraulics, (b) Environmental Engineering, (c) Water Resources Engineering and (d) Maritime Hydraulics and Coastal Engineering. The laboratories of Hydraulics and Environmental Engineering with advanced, modern instrumentation and laboratory channels and basins support the above groups in their educational and research activities. The research group in maritime hydraulics and coastal engineering consists of 5 professors, 3 research associates with Ph.D degrees and 3 post-doctoral fellows. The group supervises approximately 20 undergraduate students in their diploma thesis every year and 12 Ph. D students. The current research activities and experience of the group are in the following areas: (a) Storm surges (b) Computational modelling of breaking and non-breaking waves, (c) Sediment transport in wave boundary layers and in the surf zone (d) Waves-structures interaction (e) Laboratory and field measurements of coastal processes (f) Design of harbours and coastal structures (g) Flood wave propagation. |
