During the life-time of the project, three thematic calls will be launched to generate joint European research and development activities in marine biotechnology.

ERA-MBT organises stakeholder events to expand and reinforce the network of researchers, industry, policy makers and funding agencies to support the development of European marine biotechnology. These meetings will give a chance to influence the future of the ERA-MBT and furthering European Marine Biotechnology research and development.

The Marine Biotechnology ERA-NET aims to get a better overview of the existing interactions between the industry and academia, with the particular goal of identifying needs and gaps in such interactions.

Therefore, a questionnaire will be circulated between June and  July 2014 to consult the ERA-MBT  stakeholders on following groups of questions:
• General questions
• Technical Transfer Practice and Policy
• Funding schemes and marine biotechnology specific funding issues

The aggregated results will be analysed and used for the purpose of increasing awareness in industrial development environments about the potentials within marine biotechnology. ERA-MBT will further strive to develop mechanisms and tools to reduce or eliminate identified bottlenecks and barriers for a successful development within the area.

A LinkedIn Communication forum is established to bring together scientists, companies, policy makers and funding agencies to discuss the latest developments in the field of marine biotechnology in Europe. Everyone is invited to join this group and contribute with news about national or global news, publications, funding opportunites etc.

A Twitter account is used to network online with people or business posting tweets in the same area of marine biotechnology and to increase traffic to the ERA-MBT website.

ERA-MBT is working with policy, business and research communities on long-range plans to strengthen marine biotechnology capabilities and competencies. A foresight exercise, in this case termed an OUTLOOK process, highlights future research and innovation areas that need to be addressed to allow European industry to benefit from marine biotechnology. The analysis and vision in this report will help ERA-MBT to continue to expand its influence on marine biotechnology developments.

The ERA-MBT research and innovation roadmap highlights research and innovation as spanning scientific, technological, economic and societal challenges and sets a marine biotechnology research and innovation agenda to 2030. The roadmap identifies five thematic areas; the first three enable exploration of the marine environment; support biomass production and processing; and contribute to product innovation and differentiation. Two other themes, policy support and stimulation; and the provision of enabling technologies and infrastructure; provide the foundation to support growth in the Blue Bioeconomy. National and European policy organisations can use the roadmap in developing measures to maximise the contribution of the Ocean's bioresources to the bioeconomy and societal welfare, and funding agencies can use it to identify marine biotechnology related research themes.

ERA-MBT launched the Marine Biotechnology Strategic Research and Innovation Roadmap on the 12th October 2016 at Hotel Marivaux, Brussels.

A noon to noon workshop with the coordinators/leaders of a selected group of project leaders of various European Bioeconomy projects and networks took place from 8 to 9 September 2015 in Berlin, Germany, back to back with the PLATFORM Annual Event 2015. The aim of the workshop was to identify potential overlaps in research topics/goals and explore opportunities for collaboration.

One of the central aims of the ERA-MarineBiotech is to provide access to relevant information in the field of marine biotechnology. Open-access resources will be updated continuously during the ERA-MarineBiotech and beyond. This long-term living resource will serve as an information exchange hub to mobilize a broad European marine biotech RTDI community.
