Abstract
    From previous laboratory and field experiments a linear correlation between trace metal concentrations in soil and plant was suggested but not finally proved. Conflicting results have been explained by varying influences of nutrients (N, P, etc.), climatic or environmental differences (O2, H2O, light etc.) or even by phenotypic variations within one species (Cooper 1982; Valiela & Teal 1984; Brown 1981). For the study of the uptake and behaviour of heavy metals from the soil by the root, and the behaviour of heavy metals from the roots to the shoot of a plant, a reliable multi-element analysis method (Fingerprint) is essential. Instrumental Neutron Activation Analysis (INAA) with negligible sample pretreatment is such a valuable method to examine sampling and sample handling before analysis. It offers, as a multi-element technique, the opportunity for a fingerprint characterization of biological specimens (Rossbach 1986).
