Abstract
The development of phytoplankton patches in Dutch and Belgian inshore waters is described for the period January to June in both 1968 and 1971, and the temporal and spatial distribution of these patches is examined in relation to the growth of the most abundant planktonic herbivores. Detailed information is provided on the population dynamics of Remora longicornis, Acartia tonsa, and Fritallaria borealis, and more general information on Pseudocalanus minutus and Paracalanus parvus. It is noted that Ronday has divided this region into two zones with differing nutrient flow characteristics, and that the northerly zone is regarded as eutrophic. The presence of Acartia tonsa is discussed against this background.
