Abstract
The germinal epithelium in teleost gonads is composed of somatic and germ cells, is supported by a basement membrane, and borders a body cavity or lumen. A follicle is an oocyte and an encompassing layer of follicle cells, all originating from the germinal epithelium. The theca interna and theca externa, which surround the follicle, are derived from the ovarian stroma. The nomenclature used supports a unifying concept of morphology between sexes and between taxa.
