Abstract
A total of 150 female Atlantic cod, Gadus morhua L., were collected from Smith Sound, Newfoundland in January 1999. Many of these fish were large with small ovaries that visually appeared immature or spent. Histology revealed that nearly one third of the females sampled had ovaries that were actively resorbing all oocytes that had started to ripen. The mass resorption of oocytes would have caused spawning omission by these fish in 1999. Fish with resorbing oocytes had lower liver weights than ripening fish perhaps indicating that oocyte breakdown was stimulated by nutritional deprivation.
