Abstract
The salmon homing migration is closely related to gonadal maturation, which is regulated mainly by the brain-pituitary-gonadal axis. In particular, salmon gonadotropin-releasing hormone (sGnRH) produced from the ventrocaudal telencephalon and the preoptic area, gonadotropins (GtH I and II) from pituitary gland, and gonadal steroid hormones seem to play important roles in both the homing migration and gonadal maturation in salmonids. The present paper presents gene expression profiles of sGnRH and GtHs as well as serum gonadal steroid hormone profiles in anadromous chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta) during the homing migration. Recent attempts using intramuscular GnRH analog (GnRHa) implantation to shorten homing duration and to accelerate gonadal maturation in lacustrine and anadromous sockeye salmon (O. nerka) are also described. These findings indicate sexual differences in homing profiles which may be reflective of changes in serum steroid hormone levels in salmonid fishes.
