Abstract
Density differences often have a significant influence on the groundwater flow in coastal regions. A sharp interface between fresh and salt water used to be the standard way of accounting for this influence in regional groundwater-flow models. At the SWIM 10 years ago, MAAS & EMKE (1988) presented an approach in which the same groundwater-flow model can account for an arbitrary density distribution. The approach, which had not yet been used in a finite-element model, is implemented in TRIWACO. The groundwater-flow simulation package TRIWACO uses triangular finite elements that offer flexibility in the model geometry and permeability tensor. Moreover with the transition to Windows 95 TRIWACO has become very user-friendly and efficient in model set-up.
