Abstract
One of the problems of raising small clutchless oyster seed at the Varano Lagoon (Italy) is the provision of a container having the following characteristics: cheapness and availability of material used in its construction, ease of assembly, ease of cleaning with regard to the heavy fouling experienced at Varano, adequate water exchange with the surrounding brackish water, reduction in the movement of the seed to prevent it from piling up. A length of mosquito netting which is folded in half and formed into a series of pouches by slats of wood provides a satisfactory solution. This belt of pouches is strung to a wooden frame and the whole is then positioned in the oyster-park by tying it to a submerged trestle planted in the lagoon bottom. The growth rate of the seed in this type of container is thought to be satisfactory.
