Abstract
    Ecological marine processes are characterized by distinct time scales, set by the rates of reaction, nutrient uptake. grazing,... Physical processes -which determine the transport and dispersion of the marine constituents- show, on the other hand, an extreme variability from molecular scales to climatic scales. Mathematical models, adressing specific ecological processes, must take into account those physical mechanisms,the time scales and length scales of which are in the appropriate or "spectral window", The spectral windows of marine variability are discussed here and it is shown that the most important ecological processes such as primary and secondary production can be associated with physical processes in the mesoscale, synoptic scale and seasonal scale range which characterize what one may call the "weather of the sea".
