Abstract
Results obtained from hydraulic laboratory studies in circular and octagonal fish-rearing tanks indicate that it is possible to design the water inlet and outlet arrangements in such a way that full control over the flow conditions in the tanks can be achieved. The transport capacity of the water for the removal of particles from the tank bottom (excrement and uneaten food-pellets) can easily be controlled by varying the impulse force from the inflowing water. The intensity of water exchange (water replacement) at different places in the tank can be optimized by using proper inlet arrangements. Future investigations will aim at applying the laboratory results in cooperation with the Institute of Aquaculture Research, the Norwegian Hydrotechnical Laboratory (NHL), and the Institute of Marine Research, Bergen, Norway, in order to develop practical guidelines lor the design and operation of fish-rearing tanks of different types and sizes.
