Abstract
The fauna of nineteen brackish coastal inland waters in the south-western part of the Netherlands has been investigated by cluster analysis. Several clusters were recognized and these showed a correlation with the average chlorinity together with the fluctuations in chlorinity.A classification system of the brackish waters is given. This system shows some similarities with the "Venice system".It appears that marine species have less resistance against incidentally low chlorinities than brackish-water species. Marine species have a lower degree of resistance against regular fluctuations in chlorinity than brackish-water species.
