Abstract
The hatching enzyme of Ascidiella aspersa has been characterized as a trypsin-like enzyme. It dissolves the main part of the chorion and renders hatching possible at the end of embryogenesis. In contrast to Knaben's statement, this enzyme is secreted by the embryo itself and not by the test cells.
