Abstract |
The occurrence and the main morphological aspects of pseudohermaphroditism (PSH) of Prosobranchs (in 69 species of 46 genera) are described. We propose a new classification of the female determined PSH into seven principal stages and three different ways of evolution (types a, b and c; comp. fig. 3). Their occurrence depends on the pollution of the sea and the topography of the coastal environment of the population. 13 further forms of morphological alterations observed in different species are mentioned and the special case of the ovipositor in Mesogastropods is interpreted. Finally, three rare examples of male determined PSH are presented. |
