Abstract
Androgen receptor (AR) cDNAs encoding two distinct subtypes (eAR alpha and eAR beta ) were isolated from eel testis. In transient transfection assays of mammalian cells, both eAR proteins displayed androgen-dependent activation of transcription from the androgen-responsive promoter. Tissue distribution of their mRNAs was different. This is the first cDNA isolation of two different functional AR molecules from vertebrates.
