Abstract
Lunar periodicity of gonadal development in the golden rabbitfish, Siganus guttatus, was studied using histological observation of gonads, and immunological measurements of plasma sex steroid hormones and a yolk precursor, vitellogenin (VTG). Histological gonad development was observed to occur in June and July and peaked at the first quarter moon of each month. Plasma steroid hormones and VTG concentrations were measured weekly and correlated closely with gonadal activity. These cyclic changes support the hypothesis that the lunar periodicity is a major factor in stimulating reproductive activity in S. guttatus.
