The Dutch and Belgian coastal dunes have suffered from severe scrub encroachment during the 20th Century, due to natural succession, the cessation of live-stock grazing and the fixation of blowouts. This article describes the development of scrub vegetation during 1938-1990 in the Luchterduinen of the Amsterdam Water Supply and its underlying causes. This development was subsequently compared with changes in scrub vegetation elsewhere along the Dutch and Belgian coast.
