In this first phase, chemicals are selected, based on their occurrence on existing lists (Gesamp, IMDG, Ospar…) and databases. An extended list has been compiled (3000 substances). This list will be refined to 400 products, based on transport figures, occurrence in past accidents on sea, intrinsic properties… Furthermore, the data gathering phase has started for substances that will certainly be included in the final list.

After a kick-off meeting with the partners and two technical meetings, the first meeting with the users committee took place 26 October, 2004. The users committee agreed on the structure and approach of the project. Additionally, the users gave input on for instance how to compile the substance list, lay-out of the database, other complementary research projects and so on.

Next steps are to compile the final list, send it out to the interested partners for comments and gather the data for the selected substances.
