“Using the lipidomics infrastructure at Ghent university allowed me to discover high concentrations of polyunsaturated fatty acids in seafood harvested in Peru. This creates opportunities to optimize the feeding preferences of the local population and to promote a healthier diet.”
Iván Loaiza Alamo, Facultad de Biología Marina, Universidad Científica del Sur, Lima, Perú
The Institute of Oceanography of the University of Gdańsk conducts interdisciplinary scientific research in the marine realm and is the only institution of higher education in Poland that trains students in oceanography. Our research activities are structured in topic-oriented departments and concern various aspects of marine biology and ecology, marine physics (including satellite oceanography), chemistry and geology. We offer modern infrastructure with well-equipped laboratories, temperature-controlled rooms, field station and research vessels.
We offer three research platforms that allow access (on-site and remote) to the Baltic Sea (coastal zone and open waters; sampling and acoustic imaging), biological resources (including culture collection of algae), experimental facilities and technology platforms:
- Institute of Oceanography, the main campus located in Gdynia
- Prof. Krzysztof Skóra Hel Marine Station, with unique location on the tip of the Hel Peninsula
- R/V Oceanograf
