Authority This family-level taxon was first mentioned by Lambert (1900: p. 53(55)) as subfamily Echinocyaminæ. Although frequently attributed to Lambert & Thiéry (1914) the authority, therefore, is Lambert, 1900. [details]

(2009: p. 97) argued not to use the family Echinocyamidae due to the fact that it was based on an erroneous interpretation of the genera Echinocyamus and Fibularia by Lambert.
