Belgian navy investigates the North Sea
The Belgian Ministry of Defense will contribute to archaeological research in the North Sea. An underwater robot will investigate the seabed off the coast of Zeebrugge.
At the request of the Flemish Heritage Agency, the Belgian navy will contribute to the SeArch project. A Remote Environmental Monitoring System (REMUS) will be used to investigate the site of a 16th century wreck off the coast of Zeebrugge. The REMUS is an underwater robot that dives independently approximately 3 meters above the seabed and allows detailed mapping of the seabed. The navy normally uses this system to detect seamines.
The navy combines their support to the project with an already previously planned exercise. That way using REMUS does not give rise to any additional costs.
