The Laboratory of Applied Environmental Economics (EREOPE) is organised within the Department of Environmental Studies (DES), University of the Aegean (UoA). EREOPE is collaborating with researchers from both the stuff of the Department and external collaborators, supported by the general budget of the University and external finance on a competitive base. It is directed by Prof. M. S. Skourtos. The EREOPE organises its teaching and research activities on graduate and postgraduate level on subjects such as: environmental accounting and indicators, non-market valuation of environmental resources, economic instruments for environmental protection, socio-economic scenarios for environmental change, qualitative research methods for environmental management, participatory environmental management, stakeholder analysis. Its research is funded among others by EU, UNEP, the Greek state, municipalities and private firms on a range of problems including: the implementation of economic instruments in Greece, valuation of the protection of marine biodiversity and coastal resources, integrated coastal zone management, river basin management, the design of regional indicators for sustainable development, cost-effectiveness of water protection measures, multicriteria analysis of projects and policies, risk perceptions and attitudes of coastal stakeholders, the notions of fairness and equity in multilateral environmental agreements, etc. A strong emphasis in EREOPE’s research is placed on testing and adapting modern valuation techniques for the environmental problems in Greece and the Mediterranean |
