The University of Gdánsk (UG) is an institution of higher learning, with eleven faculties and over 30,000 students, doctoral students and post-graduates, who are taught by 1700 academic staff. The Institute of Oceanography of UG trains students in oceanography, environmental protection and geology. Research activities at IO UG are structured in topic-oriented departments, and concern various aspects of marine biology and ecology, marine physics, chemistry and geology.

The University of Gdánsk is one of the Polish partners in ASSEMBLE Plus, IOPAN being the other. ASSEMBLE Plus access services offered in Poland are
