Training sessions in Mombasa on the use of RV Mtafiti as an oceanographic research vessel20 - 27 January 2014In preparation of the commissioning of the ship (27 January 2014), two staff members of VLIZ (Francisco Hernandez and Delphine Vanhaecke) went on a mission to KMFRI to provide a full week of training sessions on board of RV Mtafiti and at the KMFRI premises. 27 members of KMFRI joined these trainings including research officers, ICT staff, technicians and students (participant list). Training sessions mainly involved demonstrations on the use and maintenance of the sampling equipment on board, underway data acquisition and processing and scientific cruise planning (program). Training also involved an exercise on communication and outreach to the local people, informing them on all the possibilities the vessel has got to offer to oceanographic research and how the coastal communities can profit from this research. |
