KMFRI and VLIZ sign a formal Memorandum of Understanding for bilateral collaboration in the field of marine sciences. With this action, the tradition of marine collaboration between Kenya and Belgium is renewed.
The oceanographic research vessel Mtafiti, formerly RV Zeeleeuw, was donated by the Government of Flanders to the Government of Kenya.

From this day forward RV Mtafiti, managed by KMFRI, can be deployed in the West Indian Ocean Region for the purpose of biological, chemical and oceanographic research.
