KMFRI field station in Gazi
Gazi Bay has been the main site for marine research in Kenya during the past Kenya-Belgium collaborations. It will remain a principal area for marine research in the future, which is facilitated by the KMFRI field station located in Gazi.
The KMFRI field station is mainly engaged in mangrove planting, rehabilitation and the development of restoration techniques. There are also laboratories for biological and chemical analyses in which it is possible to undertake productivity, hydrographical and chemical assessment of the coastal waters. Furthermore, regional, national and international research and training programmes are held there.
Oceanographic Research Vessel Mtafiti
The arrival of the RV Mtafiti (October 2013) creates a wide variety of opportunities for scientific research and collaborations in the West Indian Ocean.
KMFRI, in partnership with WIOMSA (Western Indian Ocean Marine Science Association), will support and coordinate the operation of the RV Mtafiti for research of the large marine ecosystems of the East African coast.
RV Mtafiti will facilitate scientific research in priority themes, identified by African Member States of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO, such as coastal erosion, pollution, sustainable use of living resources, management of key habitats and ecosystems and tourism.
