Authority The Hartman catalogue, Westheide (1990), and other sources credit Czerniavsky (1881) with authorship of Protodrilidae. However Protodrilus Czerniavsky, 1881, a nomen dubium, is homonym to Protodrilus Hatschek, 1881, with no absolute proof of which is senior. For stability (short of applying for a ICZN ruling) Hatschek's genus is best considered senior and so the family name can only be based on Hatschek's genus, even though Hatschek did not use 'Protodrilidae' until later, at least by 1888. See further comments on the reliability of the relative dates of the genus names under Protodrilus Czerniavsky. [G. Read, December 2013] [details]
Editor's comment The Family Protodrilidae Czerniavsky based on Protodrilus Czerniavsky has a separate family-level entry. It is believed to be invalid as the only species is indeterminable. Nevertheless Czerniavsky (1881) did explicitly create that new family-level name, as well as his new genus for his new species Protodrilus mirabilis. [details]
