Type designation Type species Dentalium subulatum Deshayes, 1825 by monotypy. Its junior synonymy to Dentalium arietinum O. F. Müller, 1776 was noted by Bush, 1905, and perhaps consequently the Hartman catalogue incorrectly has D arietinum as type of Ditrupa. A type species can only be an original member of a genus. It does not matter if it becomes a synonym subsequently as it remains the type regardless.
Berkeley also mentions Dentalium gadus Montagu, 1803 and tentatively suggested it was a Ditrupa (he was incorrect) after examining a poor specimen, but he did not use the name in Ditrupa. Only Ditrupa subulata is figured, and it is named as such in the figure caption. [details]
