Abstract : An up to date list for the polychaetes from the English Channel is presented for the first time, including 493 species. The presence of 92 other species can not be attested. The inventory is based on recent systematic and benthic studies. The species number is higher in the western part of the Channel (Roscoff, Plymouth, the normano-breton Gulf) than in the two areas in the eastern part (Bay of Seine and Wimereux): Roscoff 402 species, Plymouth 277 species, the normano-breton Gulf 265 species, the Bay of Seine 212 species and Wimereux 225 species. The decrease in number of species from the western to the eastern part of the Channel is probably related to a hydroclimatic gradient. Some data for the Marine Fauna from Roscoff, the Bay of Seine and Wimereux are unpublished.
