Diet Dinoflagellates exhibit wide variation in feeding habits. Approximately half of the living species are photosynthetic, but most of these also are heterotrophic to some extent, and some dinoflagellates with functional chloroplasts can switch entirely to heterotrophy in the absence of sufficient light.
