From editor or global species database
Depth range Subtidal to 75 m. [details]
Distribution Western Atlantic Ocean: from Chesapeake Bay (Virginia, Atlantic coast of the USA) to Texas (USA, Gulf of Mexico). [details]
Etymology Not stated. The specific epithet incerta is a Latin adjective, feminine of incertus and meaning 'uncertain', 'doubtful' or 'obscure', and presumably refers to the uncertain position of the species when originally described by Webster (1879). [details]
Habitat Originally found in a fragment of loosely compacted sandstone. In medium-fine to fine-very fine sand, silty sand, clayey sandy silt, sandy silty clay, or mud, from subtidal to shelf depths. [details]
Type locality Northampton County, eastern shore of Virginia, between the mainland and the line of outside islands, Virginia, USA, Atlantic Ocean (gazetteer estimate 37.36°, -75.82°), in a dredged fragment of loosely compacted sand-stone. [details]
Type material Type material was not found in the Smithsonian Institution, Washington (USNM), where most of Webster's polychaete material was deposited, and apparently it no longer exists (Pettibone, 1966: 177). Apparently M.H. Pettibone had the intention to desigate a neotype and paraneotypes with base on newly collected material from Chesapeake Bay (Virginia) (see Wolf, 1984: 29-5), but they were not designated as such in her published monograph. See USNM 30985 for intended paraneotypes, and USNM 30986 for intended neotype, at the Invertebrate Zoology Collections, of the Smithsonian Institution (USA). [details]
