Type material Arnaud (1978:112) mentions 2 specimens in the type collection at MNHN, Paris yet adds that these are specimens of the fossil Turritella tricarinata (Brocchi, 1814) - duly adding that an exchange took place in the past. Examinations of the syntype material by C. Vos (2011) concluded that the specimens present at that moment are specimens of the recent species commonly referred to as Turritella communis[details]

Additional information Hammer (1775:211) used the name Turbo terebra for the European species occuring near Norway, today commonly referred to as Turritella communis Risso, 1826, and using reference to Fauna Svecica of Linné, 1761. [details]

Classification Some authors consider T. communis as a subspecies of the fossil T. tricarinata (Brocchi, 1814). The majority of authors who consider both forms as separate species are followed. [details]
