Neotype MNCN 16.01/16921, geounit Naples [details]
From editor or global species database
Distribution Occurs throughout the Mediterranean Sea and along the Atlantic Iberian and French coast in intertidal and shallow subtidal depths. Reports from elsewhere probably relate to different but similar species (Arias et al 2016): eg Pacific Ocean, China Sea, Gulf of siam, Indian Ocean, Arabian Sea, Gulf of Oman, Persian Gulf, red Sea, Atlantic Ocean (as per Fauvel,1953). [details]
Neotype Arias et al. (2016: 7) justify a neotype: "A neotype is required for Diopatra neapolitana since the original description is brief and incomplete and diagnostic characters are generic rather than specific. The original type locality of D. neapolitana was given as “Regno di Napoli” (the Kingdom of Naples, comprising the southern part of the Italian peninsula); however the exact locality was not specified and our search for existing type material in relevant museum collections proved unsuccessful. Apparently Delle Chiaje did not deposit types as was previously concluded by Sweeney and Roper (1998), Ford and Hutchings (2005) and Norman et al. (2005). This has led to a species vaguely and variably defined by different authors and reported from many different sites and habitats worldwide. The confusion over the identity of this species has hindered description and correct identification of related species over the last century. A redescription will constitute a baseline from which the numerous D. neapolitana-like species reported around the world can be contrasted with the type specimens and the presumed cosmopolitanism of the species can be re-evaluated."
