Etymology Not stated. The specific epithet frontifilis is composed by the Latin noun fronti, dative singular of frons and meaning 'forehead' or 'front', and the Latin noun filis, plural of filum and meaning 'thread', 'string' or 'filament', and presumably refers to the presence of filiform appendages (tentacles and branchiae) only in the anterior region of the body of the species. Habitat Type material found on stones, among Melobesia, at about 2 fathoms depth (about 4 m; see Grube, 1861: 77; Banse, 1969: 2600). Other records refer sand, stones, rocks, or calcareous algae, between 1-124 meters. [details]
Type locality Adriatic Sea, Croatia, near Cres (= Cherso) (geocoordinates not provided, estimated with a gazetteer to be approximately lat. 44.958º, long. 14.408º), on stones, among Melobesia at about 2 fathoms depth (about 4 m).

Type material According to Banse (1969: 2600) "The holotype, which had been deposited in the ZMB, was destroyed during the Second World War (Dr G. Hartwich, Humboldt-University, Berlin, personal communication)." The loss of the holotype was also directly confirmed by Hartwich (1993: 100). [details]
