Revision of the monotypic family Arenopontiidae was made. Light and
scanning electron microscopes were used in morphological observations and the data obtained were used in phylogenetic analysis. It was determined by the result of the
analysis that genus Arenopontia was a polyphyletic taxon.
Subgenus
Pararenopontia which previously included in the genus Arenopontia was transferred to the family Leptopontiidae.
The subspecies A. (N.) africana africana and A. (N.) africana angolensis that were previously placed in Arenopontia (Neoleptastacus) were transferred to the genus Pararenopontia under the name of Pararenopontia africana comb. nov. and Pararenopontia angolensis stat. nov. & comb. nov. Genus Pararenopontia comb.
nov now contains P. trisetosa, P. africana, P. angolensis and P. poliseta sp. n.
Arenopontia (Pararenopontia) breviarticulata was regarded as species inquieranda due to incompleteness in its description.
It was determined by the result of phylogenetic analysis that Arenopontia was defined by two monophyletic groups; Arenopontia and Neoleptastacus+ Mesopontia. The presence of three genera (Arenopontia, Neoleptastacus, Mesopontia gen. nov.) was determined by considering result of the phylogenetic analysis.
Seven new species in genus Arenopontia (A. anatolica sp. n., A. basibuyuki sp.
n., A. ciplaki sp. n., A. barani sp. n., A. syltensis sp. n., A. gunduzi sp. n., A. daltonae
sp. n.) and two new species in genus Neoleptastacus (N. turcicus sp. n., N.
knidosensis sp. n.) were described. In addition, A. problematica, N. emendatus nom. nov., N. spinicaudatus, M. dillonbeachia comb.nov. were redescribed on the basis of type materials.
A. (A.) pacifica and A. (A.) spicata were removed from Arenopontia and placed into Neoleptastacus by new combination under the name of N. pacificus comb. nov.,
N. spicatus comb. nov.
