CONTRAST is a Horizon Europe project with the ambition to develop an integrated framework for evaluating the impact of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) on ecosystems. This framework will enable efficient and standardized monitoring of CECs through the use of biomarkers and chemical analyses. To gain insight into the occurrence, fate, and effects of CECs, a case study is being conducted in collaboration with the University of Gothenburg (Sweden) in and around the dredged sediment disposal site of Ostend. This study investigates the presence of CECs in the environment (sediment) as well as their accumulation in biota (fish). To further understand the distribution of CECs within organisms, fish will be dissected during sampling. This will allow for a detailed assessment of CEC concentrations in different tissues (such as liver, muscle tissue, etc.).
