SPI assessment
Sediment profile imaging as assessment tool for evaluating the impact of dredge disposal.
The aim of the project is to measure various physical and biological parameters generated from SPI images as indicators of changes in the benthic ecosystem due to dumping of dredged material. SPI related parameters (e.g. 'apparent redox discontinuity layer, bottom roughness, fauna, sediment type) provide a picture of biogeochemical processes in the sediment and are used to calculate the benthic habitat quality score (BHQ) (Nilsson & Rosenberg, 1997). To determine the threshold of unacceptable changes in parameters and BHQ, we will collect SPI images in the dredge dumping zones. In addition, the SPI images will contribute to get a better picture and knowledge of the habitat in and around the dumping zones.
