Area of (international)statutory designations for marine conservation

  • Definition : Area of Internationally marine protected sites (Ramsar, Habitat and Bird Directive), by sub-region coastal waters, in any given year.
  • Calculation : Sum of total areas of sea protected by international statutory designation (Ramsar, Habitat and Bird Directive), that are lying totally or partially in the marine realm (tidal and subtidal) in a buffer of 20 km seawards from the official shoreline. For Zeeland it covers the entire Delta including areas that are frequently or occasionally in contact with marine waters
