Heidenheim school

We are the Seminarkurs Meeresbiologie. We had the chance to chose Marine Biology as school subject at the Maria-von-Linden Schule in Heidenheim (Germany). Just to get an idea, Heidenheim is located in the south-west of Germany close to Ulm and Stuttgart. We are living here in the area of the Swabian Alb, that is a small mountain chain of up to 900m high. The Swabian Alb in our surroundings is famous for its Jurassic coral reefs especially at Gerstetten. We all have chosen the Seminarkurs to deepen our knowledge in Marine Sciences.

The highlight of our Seminarkurs was the fieldtrip and marine biological course at Banyuls sur mer, France. At the marine biological station we learned a lot about the Mediterranean and the marine environment.

Group incomplete, last time before the holidays! :-)

The teachers

Mr. W. Bennegger, head of school, started about 10 Years ago to do marine biological courses with pupils. Since that time the marine biological station at Banyuls sur mer became a familiar place to him. Generations of students had the opportunity to discover and explore the marine environments of the Mediterranean together with Mr. Bennegger.

Tim Beck, PhD Student, has studied Biology and French. He is actually working as marine biologist at the Institute of Palaeontology of the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg in Germany. He is most interested in marine invertebrates and their biodiversity. The last years he focussed on the invertebrate associations of cold-water coral reefs in the North-Atlantic.

Why am I part of the Seminarkurs?
I like it to learn in school something about a subject, which isn't a pure "school subject". After having been on a marine biological course in southern France (Banyuls sur mer), I knew that I will join-in the Seminarkurs, because I'm very interested in marine biology. Another point to join-in was, that this subject could replace my oral exams for the "Abitur".

Moritz Mandl
Age: 19
Date of birth: 18.03.1987
Language skills: German, English, French (fair)
Hobbies: Kite- and Windsurfing, snowboarding, chilling
Favourite subjects: sports, english, biology, Seminarkurs in marine biology
Grade: EG12/1
Favourite countries: Cuba, South Africa, Jamaica, Spain

Why I joined-in the Seminarkurs?
I've always been interested in fishing, diving and all kind of activities at and in the Sea. I already thought about studying marine biology after my "Abitur". We also have got the chance to integrate our marks in marine biology into our abitur. So I thought that it would be a great idea to combine my hobbies with school. I like the Caribbean islands and the mood there. So marine biology can't be wrong for my personality. Plans for the future: I want to travel around the world, do a lot of surfing and earn a lot of money.
Pets: I´ve got a cat and a dog, which is around me nearly all the time.

Why am I at the Seminarkurs?
I really liked the idea to do something at school that you can't do everywhere and marine biology is such a extraordinary subject. After having the marine biological course of the Maria-von-Linden Schule in southern France (Banyuls sur mer), it was sure that I will be addicted to the Seminarkurs. (And the fact that the mark we will get in this subject, will replace my oral exams for the "Abitur", helped also to take this decision J). After my Abitur I want to become a pharmaceutical-assistant.

Why I've decided to join the Seminarkurs in marine biology?
The Seminarkurs in Marine Biology was a chance to combine my hobby, swimming, with my favourite subject biology and, very nice aspect, the marks we get for our work in the Seminarkurs can be included in the final exams (Abitur). On the other hand I was also interested in visiting the south coast of France, especially Banyuls-sur-mer with its Marine biological station and because I've heard a lot of good stories about it.

Maria-von-Linden School - Ernährungswissenschaftliches Gymnasium

Our school is a grammar school with specialisation in food and health sciences. The Maria-von-Linden Schule only comprises the last three years and leeds us to the Abitur, the german university-entrance diploma. In addition to the general school subjects, in our school a main focus is laid on natural science subjects like chemistry, bio-chemistry, nutritional science, food-chemistry, biology, medicine and pharmacy.

We even can choose a "Seminarfach" in marine biology. This course is a specialisation course where we learn a lot about different aspects about the marine environment and its relation to our daily life. With its special orientation our school provides us with a lot of supplementary knowledge as preparation for a future employment in food and health sciences.

With the Abitur at the Maria-von-Linden School we have the possibility to access universities in whole Germany and are allowed to study all possible subjects.
