Etymology Authors: derived from Greek “megas”, meaning great, and “drilus”, meaning worm; referring to the long and thick body of the species in the genus. [details]
Homonymy A one letter difference is sufficient to prevent homonymy in generic names, thus Megadrilus Martinez, Di Domenico, Rouse & Worsaae, 2015 is not a junior homonym of Megadrillus Bigot 1857 (Insecta: Diptera). Also note that there is some probably minor potential for confusion with the term Megadrile ([Gr. megas, large; drilos, worm (contrast with Microdrile), which is long used as a general term for earthworms, and taxonomically as superorder Megadrilacea, but not originally based on a genus name. Nomenclature Martínez et al, in August 2016 proposed a new Megadrilus species 'pelagicus' in an online only paper, without ZooBank registration, and without explicit type fixation (ICZN Article 16.4). The name was eventually published in print in the March 2017 issue but without type fixation. [details]
