Taxonomy No species was named in Schmidt, 1868, so technically the name is a nomen nudum. However, the name was used again in Schmidt, 1870 with C. subtilis and C. rubiginosa as species, thus making Cacochalina available taking Schmidt, 1870 as author and year. Burton 1927 indicated C. subtilis as type. Of Schmidt's C. subtilis there is a dried specimen in MCZ and a slide in BMNH. C. subtilis and C. rubiginosa are unrecognizable, but probably belong to Callyspongia s.l. [details]
