Abstract:
Het laboratorium Plantenecologie onderzoekt talrijke aspecten van de dynamische interacties tussen planten en hun omgeving, met speciale aandacht voor water- en koolstoffluxen in xyleem en floëem. De projecten omvatten onderzoek op gewassen en bomen in zowel kunstmatige als natuurlijke ecosystemen. De onderzoeksactiviteiten gaan van de ecofysiologie van planten tot de structuur en functie van planten en de rol van planten in de mondiale water- en koolstofcyclus. De onderzoekers bestuderen het dynamische samenspel tussen plant en omgeving met gedetailleerde metingen van het microklimaat en op de plant zelf met behulp van een reeks plantensensoren. Zij passen ook radioactieve en stabiele isotopentracers en medische beeldvormingstechnieken (micro-CT, MRI en plant-PET) toe om de werking van xyleem en floëem te visualiseren en beter te begrijpen. In het laboratorium worden mechanistische plantmodellen, in 2D en 3D, ontwikkeld ter verbetering van ons begrip van hoe planten groeien en reageren op veranderingen in de omgeving waarin zij leven, en worden ook nieuwe, op planten gebaseerde controle- en stressdetectiesystemen ontwikkeld.

Het mariene aspect van het onderzoek heeft betrekking op mangroven en omvat de wateropnamecapaciteit van het blad bij mangrovesoorten en de daarmee samenhangende anatomische en hydraulische kenmerken.
