Op 1 januari 2014 ging de Nationale Plantentuin van België over in de Plantentuin Meise die deel uitmaakt van de Vlaamse overheid.
De Plantentuin is een expertisecentrum voor botanische- en tuinbouwwetenschappen, plantenbescherming en educatie. Met een herbariumcollectie van circa 4 miljoen exemplaren en een levende collectie van bijna 25.000 items behoort de Plantentuin Meise tot de grootste botanische tuinen ter wereld.
De wetenschap in de Plantentuin richt zich op collectie-gebaseerde studies van plantendiversiteit, biogeografie, vergelijkende morfologie, evolutie en ecologie. Het onderzoek omvat een breed scala aan taxonomische groepen, waaronder vasculaire planten, algen, schimmels, korstmossen en protisten. Geografisch concentreert het onderzoek van de Plantentuin zich op gematigd Europa (vooral België), de paleotropen (vooral Centraal-Afrika) en poolstreken (voornamelijk Antarctica). Het biodiversiteitsonderzoek van de Plantentuin vormt een platform voor behoud en duurzame ontwikkeling van planten, in nauwe samenwerking met andere botanische tuinen en natuurbeschermingsorganisaties. De tuin is ook gericht op het delen van zijn kennis over planten en hun omgeving met de onderzoeksgemeenschap, belanghebbenden, studenten en het grote publiek.
Het marien onderzoek van het instituut richt zich op algen en schimmels. Algenonderzoek richt zich op diversiteit en evolutie van mariene macroalgen (groene, bruine en rode algen) en microalgen (hoofdzakelijk diatomeeën). Door het combineren van moleculaire fylogenetische, morfologische, ecologische en biogeografische gegevens worden de historische processen verkend waardoor algensoorten ontstaan, ecologisch verschillen en verschillende habitats en geografische gebieden bevolken. Recentelijk worden genoombrede sequentiegegevens gegenereerd door high-throughput sequencing technologieën, gebruikt voor systematisch en evolutionair onderzoek. Ook de diversiteit van zoetwater- en brakwatersoorten op eilanden en het saliene Afrikaanse binnenland maakt deel uit van het onderzoeksgebied. Daarboven zijn ook diatomeeën van de poolgebieden (meestal Antarctica en sub-Antarctische eilanden) een belangrijk onderzoeksdomein. De Plantentuin bestudeert ook schimmels geassocieerd met halobionte en/of halotolerante Arthropoda (voornamelijk Coleoptera) uit kust- en estuariene milieus (incl. schorren uit de Schelde en Zwin). De aard van het brakke milieu en de samenstelling van de met schimmel besmette entomofauna wordt gebruikt als model om de mechanismen achter specificiteit, soortvorming, inter- en intraspecifieke overdracht van deze schimmels (Laboulbeniales) uit te leggen. |
