Beschrijving
The obtained data sets (condition index, metallothionein concentrations, the activity of acetylcholinesterase (EC 3.1.1.7), micronuclei frequency) representing biomarker responses (metallothioneins, acetylcholinesterase and micronuclei) measured during early spring and late summer in Mytilus galloprovincialis, sampled from two ecosystems between 2009 and 2012, both part of the Adriatic Sea (Gulf of Trieste and Boka Kotorska Bay). Environmental parameters (seawater temperature, salinity and dissolved oxygen) were measured at the time of mussels sampling being important parameters to interpret biomarker responses. meer

Sampling sites were selected according to previous knowledge on pollution pressures in the Gulf of Trieste (Bay of Koper (ST1), Bay of Strunjan (ST2), Bay of Piran (ST3)) and the Boka Kotorska Bay (Bay of Kotor (ST4) and Bay of Herceg Novi (ST5)). Reference sites were ST2 and ST4. Sampling time was from 2009 to 2012 in early spring (in March) and late summer (in September). The size of the collected mussels ranges from 40 to 60 mm. Metallothionein (MT) concentrations were measured in composite samples made of 50 mussels and expressed as micrograms of metallothionein per gram of tissue wet weight (µg/g wet weight). Acetylcholinesterase activity was measured in hepatopancreas or gills of individual mussels and was expressed in nmol of degraded acetylcholine per milligrams of proteins per minute (nmol/min/mg protein). Micronucleus (MN) were investigated in gills of 10 mussels pere sampling site and expressed as the frequency in promiles. Condition index (CI) was measured in twenty mussels from each sampling site and expressed in mg/cm3. Abiotic parameters of seawater (temperature, salinity and dissolved oxygen content) were measured by multiparameter probe MSS 90 (Sea & Sun Technology) at the time of mussel sampling at the depth of 2 m at all sampling sites in the Gulf of Trieste and with Handheld Multi-Parameter Instrument, Multi 350i (WTW, Xylem Brand) in the Boka Kotorska, respectively.
