Abstract
    Embankments started about 1000 years ago to protect human settlements and cultivated farmland. Up to the middle of the 20th century the reclaimed land was used for agriculture exclusively. In the last three decades, more and more grounds became nature reserves with freshwater, brackish water or saltwater lagoons. The development from agriculture to nature conservation in those areas has been described in a few examples.
