| Abstract |
This paper sums up the developments in the protection of the Danish Wadden Sea by focusing on six animal species which can serve as indicator species and on different human activities. The aim is to contribute to the formation of a basis for future protection strategies. The paper evaluates the measures taken to protect nature in the Danish Wadden Sea since 1965. The evaluation is based on a review of all relevant investigations on wildlife and on the exploitation of the Wadden Sea during the past 25 years. Since 1979, the Danish Wadden Sea has been protected as a nature reserve, with regulation of human activities. Restrictions on traffic and hunting seem to have had a positive effect on the nature values of the Wadden Sea, even though the disturbance caused by these activities is still a problem for wildlife. Furthermore, several activities have been banned (e.g. oil exploitation and culture plots for mussels) or have been reduced (fishery for cockles and the construction of dams). However, not all human activities have been regulated in such a way that protection of the natural resources of the Wadden Sea is guaranteed. Regulation has either been inadequate (like the fishing for the blue mussel Mytilus edulis and the discharge of dredged materials) or is still lacking. |
