Abstract
    Chronologies for coastal sediments have traditionally been provided by 14C dates combined with 210Pb chronologies for the very recent record. These are well-established dating methods, and can produce excellent results. That said, they do have certain caveats and chronological limitations, and to work reliably they demand the correct environmental conditions. This chapter will present dating methods which do not require the preservation of organic carbon, or the retention of a viable 210Pb inventory in the sediments of interest. These independent dating methods can be used exclusively to provide age control or to validate and cross-check a chronology derived using the more traditional approaches.
