Abstract
Pollen and spores of terrestrial plants can be used for reconstructing past sea level. The ubiquity, abundance, and durability of pollen and spores as well as their reciprocity with source vegetation enable them to be a powerful proxy for identifying environmental change. This chapter details how pollen is transported into sediments, a methodology for chemically isolating pollen from sediments, a framework and vocabulary for identification, and examples of how to use pollen in sea-level research.
