Abstract
    Sparsiporina elegans (Reuss, 1848), type species of the Phydoloporidae genus Sparsiporina, typical of late Eocene to early Oligocene sediments from northern Italy and central Europe, is redescribed mostly based on topotype material. A second species is recognised as belonging to the same genus, S. ramulosa (Calvet 1906), first described from doubtfully living material from the Capo Verde Islands and now found to be relatively common in Gelasian sediments from Southern Italy. The two species show close similarities in zooid morphology, zooid arrangement along the branches and growth form, but differ mostly in the morphology of the avicularia, the morphology and location of the ovicells and the zooidal dimensions. The stratigraphical and geographical distributions of both species included in the genus are discussed, as well as their ecological requirements, which probably changed slightly during geological time.
